SCRD Oil Painting

Instructor Bio & 2007 Schedule

Instructor: Pat Appling

Pat painted part time for approximately 15 years as a traditional artist. She explored the techniques of Monet, among many others. She studied under Judy Russell and Daisey Gentry in the Atlanta area.

In 1989 she met Bob Ross from The Joy of Painting television, along with his partner, Annette Kowalski (the current owner of the company) Inspired by watching the gentle man with the quiet voice paint beautiful pictures in 30 minutes, she longed to study this technique. She then entered into the teacher certification program with the Bob Ross Company and studied with Bob’s former sister-in-law, Pat Mabe. She was certified to teach landscapes (and seascapes) that year, and flowers the next year. She was also in the first wildlife certification class in the Bob Ross Company.

Pat has studied traditional seascapes with California artist, Joyce Ortner, who taught Bob Ross how to paint the sea. A few years ago she appeared on television and demonstrated the special Bob Ross technique.  Pat has even been seen on QVC demonstrating and selling the Bob Ross products.

In 2001, on September 11th, she was painting roses with the owner, Annette Kowalski, near Washington DC.

Currently, Pat stays very busy with her art, often traveling to Florida, Washington DC and various other parts of GA. She also teaches regularly at Michaels, Senior Citizens groups, private parties, private corporations, and at the Blue Ridge Mountain Arts Center. She has also traveled to Holland and England as an international teacher trainer for the Bob Ross Company.

Her main focus is to teach people the art is for everybody¦ not just a special few. The joy on peoples faces when they go home after just one class with a beautiful, complete painting is completely satisfying. She has a variety of classes, some lasting as little as 2 hours, some as long as 6 hours. The result is always the same fantastic painting in one day!
